Diary notes This Wednesday night before prayer, the there will be a separate study for the men and women as it is the last Wednesday of the month. This morning we have a blessed baby dedication! Join us this Sunday night on the 23rd of June to commence a new study from the Old Testament book of Proverbs. In a world devoid of wisdom, redefining wisdom, and in desperate need of Godly wisdom, we will commence this series and in subsequent weeks grow together in wisdom for the glory of God and our good. Wise people are not born; they are made. But how? We begin our series through Proverbs (Prov 1:1-7) by exploring what wisdom is, who it is for, and where it comes from. See you on Sunday, from 6.00 p.m.
From the Pastor’s Desk –
I have always been interested in reading and knowing the story behind songs, especially worship songs, and why the artist wrote the song, what inspired the song and then, where possible, hear the original artist sing the song live. In selecting a new worship song to introduce in a church worship service it always adds something to how it enables me to worship when I am able to bring some context for the song from the authors perspective. A recent song I heard by a worship duo called Shane and Shane was “He will hold me fast”. The song immediately grabbed my attention and I soon had it on repeat in my Spotify account. When I had some time I looked more closely at the lyrics and was struck by how powerful the lyrics were with lines like “When I fear my faith will fail, Christ will hold me fast; when the tempter would prevail, He will hold me fast.” I thought this has to be an old Hymn style of lyric and then I had to search to find out the history of the song and here is what I found: In 1906 During a campaign in Toronto, Canada, a young convert with whom Robert Harkness was helping expressed the fear that he would not be able to hold out in life. A day or two later in a letter to Miss Ada Habershon, of London, Robert mentioned the need for a song that would give definite assurance for the young Christian. Robert received a batch of seven new songs written by Miss Habershon. As R.A. Torrey preached his sermon one afternoon (instead of listening!) Robert occupied the time in setting the seven songs to music. One of these was “He will hold me fast”. The same evening the song was introduced by Chas. M. Alexander to an audience of over 4,000 people. I look forward to singing “He will hold me fast” with the believers of Calvary Chapel Secret Harbour this Sunday, in 2019. – Pastor Nathanael!
