Daily devotion – Discipleship is what we are called to!
Take My yoke upon you and LEARN from Me – Matthew 11:29
Helen and I committed our lives to Jesus Christ back in 1977. We have served the Lord together for 44 years now and I am still learning how to walk with my Saviour!
A generation ago, a young zealous Christian man by the name of Jim Elliot left Wheaton College to become a missionary for Jesus Christ. His first and last mission would be to the Aucas in Ecuador where Jim would be killed by those he went to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with.
Jim Elliot wrote these words before his death, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”
Being a follower of Jesus Christ, a disciple, brings with it its own “blood, sweat, and tears”!
When we come to Christ, He takes away one set of burdens – the burden of sin, the burden of guilt, the burden of separation from God and the burden of hopelessness.
But Jesus also calls us to follow Him, to renounce our selfish desires and seek His will above all else. He calls each of us to “Take His yoke upon us and to learn from Him.”
Are we exchanging one burden for another – the burden of sin for the burden of obedience? No!
For it is no burden to follow Jesus Christ and be His disciple. Instead, we become the bearers of joy – because now we are yoked to the very Son of God. Nor is it too heavy to bear, for Jesus Christ bears it with us: “My yoke is easy and My burden is light” – Matthew 11:30
Today in your life, with whom are you yoked – the world or Jesus Christ?
