Daily devotion – walking with God

Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh – Galatians 5:16

The Book of Galatians is one of my favourite books in the Bible. Each time I read it I picture the Apostle Paul in this glorious great courtroom, pacing the floor with the most amazing question and answer brief one could ever hear as he deals with grace, sin, the war between the flesh and our spirit and God’s amazing love.

Paul teaches us in this great letter to the Church in Galatia, to walk in the Spirit. But what does that mean you may say? Walking in the first place simply means to place one foot in front of the other and to go forward one step at a time!

If you stop doing this, you are no longer walking. You are standing still – a place many Church goers have come to in our modern consumer society. Walking always implies movement, progress, direction along with maturing.

This is what it means to walk with God. It means moving forward in step with God. It means being confident and trusting in the way God is leading your life.

The problem is that we are weak. We stumble or get distracted, diverted, or get weary and we stop moving forward. But that is one reason why the Holy Spirit has been given to us. Galatians 5:16 could very well be written – “Walk by means of the Spirit”.

One of the highest commendations in the Bible is found in these words about the man who ensured his family survived the predicted flood of judgment that would cover the entire earth – Noah. It says that “Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God.” Genesis 6:9

This week, walk with God, not in front of Him, not lagging distant far behind Him, but with Him, in step. This will ensure that your every day will be blessed as you walk in step with He who loves you.
