Daily devotion – Where have all the Bibles Gone?

Pastor Keith   -

Where have all the Bibles gone.

I love seeing people carrying their Bible to Church, especially the kids. It was not long ago that every person had in their hands their personal Bible when they went to Church.

Whilst the electronic age of Bibles being able to be sourced on phones, tablets etc, is an amazing aid. I think this has also led to a further departure of people away from reading their Bible. The danger of using the electronic form in Church being the incoming text notification, the nagging desire to just check your Facebook, emails during the teaching. (just checking!)

But as I read my Bible or as I sit with it open under its teaching, I will highlight or make a notation, a comment – “Keith you need to do this or remember this..” You get my drift.

The modern Church of 2021 is sadly overall Biblically illiterate. Thus the Church as individuals is weaker through its lack of knowledge of God’s Word. People today somehow have found it comfortable to come to Church with no Bible, to not read the Bible at home or have any desire to do so. As we teach God’s Word book by book, chapter by chapter, verse by verse here at Calvary Chapel Secret Harbour, many sitting in the pews struggle in their hearing. Their ears are not tuned to the voice of the Holy Spirit which happens when you are a person of the Bible.

Therefore, when hot button topics are dealt with from our ever changing world, Biblically ignorant or illiterate believers, become susceptible to the ‘snake oil’ philosophies of the world.

People who are not in the Word of God, nor have a hunger for God’s Word, are set to remain eating baby formula instead of the real meat of the Word – You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. – Hebrews 5:12

This coming Sunday we are teaching from Luke 21 which covers Jesus Olivet discourse when He was asked by His disciples what would be the signs of the end of the age. In this passage there is much Bible prophecy, events that will be cataclysmic which are detailed in the Book of Revelation and a matter called the rapture of the Church.

These are ‘meaty’ matters which for some sadly this Sunday they will not be able to digest as their diet is limited to ‘milky’ matters.

May you become a person of the Word – remember in the Lord’s prayer Jesus taught us to pray for our daily bread… This is not just food. For Jesus also said that man does not live by bread alone but by every Word that proceeds from the mouth of God. It means be in the Bible every day!

People often wish God would speak to them and help them with the decisions and difficulties of living in today’s world as Christians. Yet, many of the same people have placed a muzzle over the very mouth of God by not being in the Word of God.

I guarantee you that if you begin a healthy and daily reading and study of God’s Word, you will find God speaking to you in volumes!

And you diet will go from milk to meat and you will grow and mature in your walk and relationship with God!
