Daily devotion – the blessed shepherds

Pastor Keith   -

Luke 2:8 Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night.

Christmas Eve has arrived – the excitement builds but also much deeper thoughts and contemplations. That the Holy God would consider us, would love us so much, that He would plunge into this fallen world of our own foolish doing, His only begotten Son – as a baby.

The first Christmas worship service was conducted not in a temple or a cathedral, nor a synagogue, but in an open field. The good news, the tidings, of Christ’s birth echoed in the skies as the massive host of angels proclaimed this good news to lowly shepherds.

Do you think it strange that this glad word, the mighty proclamation, was not first given to the priests, the scholars, or the Pharisees? The reason is clear: God speaks to those who are prepared in their hearts to listen!

Apparently, these humble shepherds were prepared, and therefore able to discern the voice from Heaven, above the noisy din of earth’s confusion.

It is still the same today, only the sinner who is ashamed and troubled by their guilt and seeks to be free from such, will heed the good news of Jesus Christ today.

2022 will be an eternal decision-making year for many souls. Some will sadly walk away from the One who offers them the free gift of salvation. But thankfully there will be those who will hear the Gospel for the first time, will bow their hearts and repent of their sins before the Saviour and Lord Jesus Christ.

What are your plans for 2022? To grow closer to God, to serve Him as your Lord and Saviour?

Make the only right decision and humbly come before Him who was born King and like the lowly shepherds receive the glorious, good news and bow down before Him.

Luke 19:10 “for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
