Daily devotion – the Magi
“We….. have come to worship Him.” – Matthew 2:2
I am intrigued by these men often referred to as the Magi, who travelled vast distances following a star, to see the Child born who was King. They seem to have been astronomers, holy men from the ancient Persian Empire. The Magi were not Jewish but Gentiles, scholars unlike the shepherds who came that first Christmas night.
Yet the Magi were united with the Shepherds in their worship of the Lord Jesus, forerunners of millions of other Gentiles who have come to worship He who was born King.
Nearly 80% of the world’s Christians today are non-white, non-western.
The amazing and beautiful universal appeal of Jesus, irrespective of ethnicity is wonderful in a world that is sadly so segregated.
Jesus brought the shepherds from the fields and the Magi from the East. He still acts like a giant magnet drawing people to Him.
This is why He is called the Saviour of the world. As Christmas approaches, we gather with family, friends and colleagues and for many of us we often think that many of those will never come to know Christ. We often feel that someone is just too hard, too difficult, too stubborn, or too far gone to ever desire to worship He who is born King.
Let us be reminded of two things when we have such thoughts. Firstly, no-one is beyond the reach of Christ. The Magi, many miles away in a foreign land came to worship Him.
But secondly, you and I came to Him, we were lost and away from Him, but amazingly we came to worship Him.
Let us be reminded of the Apostle Paul’s words of his own journey – 1Ti 1:15 “This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.”
This Christmas let us live in hope, let us trust in faith, let us pray believing, that in our sphere of lost loved ones, there will be some who this Christmas will too come to worship Him who was born king, for the first time – just like the Magi did!
