Daily devotion – a symphony
Last Friday evening, Helen and I attended the Perth Concert Hall to see and hear the Western Australian Symphony Orchestra perform. It was an amazing performance of gifted professional musicians of the highest order. There were ninety plus members of the orchestra, each divided into their specific groups, percussion, woodwind, strings and so on.
In front and commanding the performance was the conductor, baton in hand and the music program spread out before them. As we watched the performance I saw an amazing example of how the Church of Jesus Christ is to operate just like the orchestra. The music program, the timing, the direction for each musical group and individual musicians was controlled completely by the conductor. I pictured in my mind Jesus being the Master Conductor of His Church, each of us with our particular God given gift, being directed when to play, when to stop and when to join in with all the orchestra at His timing and direction.
Each piece of the orchestra had a particular instrument and skill to play that instrument, all under the direction of the conductor when needed.
No one played at their own discretion and each musician kept a keen eye on the conductor throughout the entire performance.
The result was a symphonic masterpiece of heavenly music!
But for the piece to sound as it had been written to sound, every musician was to play their part as guided by the conductor.
The Bible tells us – 1Co 12:14 For the body is not one member, but many.
1Co 7:7….. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that.
1Co 12:18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.
God has written a masterpiece of His love and grace for the world – John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Now as we are members of this Body, we each under the direction of our Lord and Conductor, Jesus Christ, are to watch Him and utilise the gift we each have been given so that the world may hear the blessed music of the Gospel. For it is truly the most Heavenly music a lost soul’s heart and ear could ever hear.
