Daily devotion – When things get tough

“The eternal God is your refuge.” – Deuteronomy 33:27

When you hear the word suffering what goes through your mind? Do you usually think of physical pain as your first thought? But in today’s modern society we are more aware of psychological suffering being just as real. And for many – sometimes far more devastating.

It could be an inner grief or sorrow you cannot express, even to those closest to you. It may drain your strength or even paralyse you with anxiety. It may harm your relationships, or even grab you so strongly that it becomes more than just a temporary problem, but a serious psychological illness.

The Apostle Paul knew what it was to experience psychological suffering; when he wrote to the Church in Corinth – “out of much affliction and anguish of heart” – 2 Corinthians 2:4

Jesus our Lord, in the Garden of Gethsemane we are told, “being in agony….prayed more earnestly.” – Luke 22:44.

Peter, after denying the Lord three times it said of him that he… “went out and wept bitterly” – Luke 22:62

But when such times come, and they do come to us all, let us remember, God still loves us! He does not abandon us. He is our Good Shepherd, He is our Saviour! Let us at such times remember, “The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” – Deuteronomy 33:27.
