Daily devotion – Christ our solid Rock

Pastor Keith   -

The greatest foundation for life is Jesus Christ. Jeremiah the prophet said, “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord.” Jer 17:7

One of my favourite old hymns, “The Solid Rock”, by Edward Mote and William Bradbury, starts with, “My hope is built on nothing less, than Jesus blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name. On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand.”

Today, what is your hope built on? You may hope for a pay rise in your job. Or you may hope that you pass your exam at school. Maybe your hope is to win a certain contest at your sporting club.

All such hopes are built on externals over which we have little control. The boss agreeing with your work ethic and value. Studying the right information in your subject or having the physical capacity to outdo other opponents.

But all of these “hopes” fade into insignificance when compared with the greatest hope of all – our hope of salvation in Jesus Christ. And that hope is an absolute certainty, because it is based not on our ourselves or our good works, but completely on “Jesus’ blood and righteousness.”
