Daily devotion – the build up to the Cross

Pastor Keith   -

It’s the Monday after Jesus has ridden into Jerusalem where the people had sung and cried out the Hallel Psalms… Mat 21:9 Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: “Hosanna to the Son of David! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’ Hosanna in the highest!”

What was going through the minds of the disciples at this time? We know from Scripture that they were not aware of Jesus coming crucifixion and resurrection. Even though Jesus had repeatedly told them of what was going to happen. Jhn 12:16 His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him.

What was going through Jesus mind? We know from His prayer in John 17 that He was set for all that was about to unveil.

As Easter comes around we often forget that Jesus was God in the flesh, and that He did have emotions and feelings just like you and I. We see that expressed clearly when He will pray in the Garden of Gethsemane. Let us never therefore think that Jesus was just cold and calculated in these last days leading up to His arrest, to His brutal whipping, and crucifixion.

He would bleed, He would feel pain just like you and I, He would be disappointed in Judas even though He knew Judas’s heart.

Let us remember this Easter 2022, that our Lord suffered as a man, as you and I.

He is our High Priest who knows what we experience when we go through difficult and painful times.

Heb 4:15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.

This is why we should go to our Lord constantly in prayer. He has walked this earth. Lived this life. He has been misunderstood, slandered and lied against. He understands just where you are at!

But in all of this He never never returned back the ill treatment and cruelty that was laid on Himself.

1Pe 2:23 who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously….

What a wonderful Saviour we have in Christ.

Be sure to join us this Wednesday evening in the Church Olive Garden as we travel back in time to the that fateful night in the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus was pressed to the point that His sweat turned into droplets of blood….for you and I.
