Daily devotion – Mothers

Pastor Keith   -

2Ti 1:5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

It seems as if Timothy’s grandmother was the first one in the family won to Jesus Christ. Then Timothy’s mother followed, Eunice, and from them both, young Timothy gave His heart to Christ.

How wonderful the influence in the family that a grandma or mum can have in ensuring their children come to know Christ. In a world that now stupidly is unable to define what is a woman, how much more has the destruction of the role and position of a mother become significant?

Take a step back and view how Satan has systematically pulled apart the key cornerstones of what makes a family. In its wake is an ever increasing number of men and women who have been denied the love of a mother or a father as such roles have been relegated to the scrapheap of a broken world.

I remember watching a documentary of a family of brothers and sisters trying to track down their mother. Sadly, their mother literally walked out the door of the house one day leaving her little children home alone and never returned. Another child she had, she went to the movies and left the child at the cinema. Somehow these children found one another after years of being orphans and living with other families.

Bit when they gathered there was something within each of them that was driving a passion to find out who their mother was and where she was now living. The search began….

Eventually they were able to identify who their mum was and where her last know residence was. However, she had passed away in that time. Even though their mum had walked out and left them, even though she had discarded one at movies, her children, now all grown up and middle aged, had a deep longing to find their mum and be held by her arms….to be loved by her…to be held by their mum!

We now live in a world where children are denied having a father and mother many times this is by choice and indifferent unions.

This Sunday we celebrate Mother’s Day – and I find it fascinating that when God the Father sent His only Son into this world, He sent Him to a family, whereby Jesus would have a mother….Mary, and in addition, a stepfather as well.

When the Apostle Paul wrote to the Church in Thessalonica, he chose some interesting words to describe how he loved them – 1 Thess 2:6 Nor did we seek glory from men, either from you or from others, when we might have made demands as apostles of Christ. 7 But we were gentle among you, just as a nursing mother cherishes her own children. 8 So, affectionately longing for you, we were well pleased to impart to you not only the gospel of God, but also our own lives, because you had become dear to us.

This Sunday we honour all mums!
