Daily devotion – The old enemy
Gen 5:5 So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years; and he died.
Death is that which we all must deal with. It never goes away in a fallen world. We may have a break from it but eventually it will again arise in our face, and we must confront the most painful of all enemies.
Death follows no pattern, it does not differentiate from rich or poor, young or old, it will take each one of us eventually, unless we are raptured away by our Saviour and Lord.
As Christians, our own mortality and how we deal with it has been changed now since Christ Himself conquered that last great foe.
Hebrews 2:14 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
But we each have loved one’s who have yet not surrendered their lives to the Lord and death comes to them as well. In such times, we as Christ’s children, are to look to Him for strength and comfort as we walk down the valley of the shadow of death. It is at such times that our love for Christ and what we know about Him can give us comfort and hope.
For the Bible tells us that God is not willing that any should perish. That He, by the Holy Spirit strives with every man, woman, and child to have them know His love.
What we do know is this. That God gave His precious Son Jesus Christ to die for our loved one’s too. That we know He loves them and will give them every opportunity as He did with the thief on the Cross. So let us look to our Saviour when death circles. Let us rest in Him and His great love for the lost.
Paul wrote, Rom 8:38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, Rom 8:39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
In the meantime, let each one of us share God’s love with our unsaved loved one’s. Let us remind them of Christ’s sacrifice for them on Calvary’s Cross. Let us share the good news and pray that their hearts will soften, and their ears will listen to the voice of God as He speaks to them personally.
