Daily devotion – storms!
Mark 4:35 On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.” 36 Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. 38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”
39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. 40 But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” 41 And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”
Storm – the dictionary describes the word storm as – a violent disturbance of the atmosphere with strong winds and usually rain, thunder, lightning, or snow, move angrily or forcefully in a specified direction.
Storms come and when they hit us there is no button on them to switch them off when they are getting too strong, neither is there a dial to turn them down when they cause us concern. They have complete control and will blow, hail, damage whatever they wish for as long as they like.
But not so the storms that hit us from the enemy! When the disciples found themselves in this storm on the Galilee, this was no mere wind, rain and weather type. This was an attack from the enemy on this small gathering of men that Jesus would use to build His Church.
Satan was out to sink God’s plans. When the disciple’s faith was withering, Jesus was sleeping through weariness of ministry. The disciples panicked and waking Jesus had in their minds that He didn’t care about them or their plight.
Jesus awakes, speaks and rebukes the storm. He admonished the disciples for their lack of faith. They still had not realised just who Jesus was and what He was in control of, including storms!
There are times in our lives when we sometimes wonder if God knows or cares what we are experiencing. Remember He knows everything, and He knows every detail of our lives included.
When the enemy sends a storm your way, let us not panic as did the disciples, but let us rest and trust in being in the same boat with Jesus, that He will keep us safe in His arms.
Storms will come from the enemy, but God’s Word shuts them down and brings calm again into our lives each and every time!
Let us not make the same mistake as the disciples, let us know who Jesus is – He is the Lord of lords, the Creator of Heaven and Earth, He is the Almighty God. Trust Him and call on Him to keep you safe!
