Daily devotion – focus
What is your focus?
I have read and re-read John 4 many times over the last two weeks or so. It’s amazing how many times I have taught and studied this chapter, yet still I have come to see so much more in its 54 verses.
A couple of main points for us to glean. Firstly, that this portion of Scripture paints a beautiful picture of Jesus’ love for all humanity. From speaking to a religious man in Nicodemus in chapter 3, then in chapter 4 Jesus speaks to a woman at a well whose life has been involved in relationship overloads. Jesus then speaks to a wealthy nobleman from the royal courts.
It reveals to us that the Gospel and Christ’s heart is active to share His love and grace with every ear of every level of humanity. How often do we limit our witnessing to people only in our sphere of living?
But what really hit my heart was when Jesus shared with His disciples the focus of His life , of His coming, of His living, what it was centred on. Jesus states His life’s passion and work in one clear voice of 17 words…..
Jhn 4:34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.”
This week I am in the process of planning two funeral services. The tragedy of death takes no holiday, it never rests, and it will be waiting for each of us each new day.
We focus so much of our life and waste so much of our living on things that simply do not matter and will indeed be burned up when we stand before Jesus Christ at the precious Bema seat of judgment where our works will be either rewarded or simply dissolved.
Each evening and each new day I must examine my life. How did I honour God with the hours I lived through this day? Or, Lord lead me in this new day, that I might walk in the footsteps you have planned for me to follow.
Jesus the Son of God lived a most wondrous life. He lived just 33 years yet He completely lived each day serving His Father and carrying out His Father’s will.
You might say that Jesus’ life was of a single focus. I pray that you and I might grow closer tomorrow and the next day, should the Lord allow, for us to grow closer to fulfilling the will that our Heavenly Father has for us.
May our prayer and our life be one of a single focus too, just like our Lords. It matters not the length of time we live, but it matters greatly with how we each lived in the time our Father has given us.
