Daily devotion – weariness
Luk 8:23 and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a storm of wind came down on the lake, and they were filling with water, and were in danger.
Things wear out don’t they? It seems we are forever doing maintenance around our home. Living by the ocean is a great blessing but it’s not good for houses! They tire, get weary and worn out. They need repainting or fixing or renewing. Our physical bodies are the same. They gradually just begin to wear with joints needing replacing, bones getting tired and muscles losing their flexibility and power.
I find it fascinating that our Lord grew weary too! We find Him asleep in the back of the boat, worn out, as a storm rages and His disciples fear they are going to drown.
The rest of the story goes on to tell us that that they wake Jesus up by shaking Him, and ask Him why He is not scared or concerned they were going to all die in the storm.
Luk 8:24 And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves; and they ceased, and there was a calm.
Luk 8:25 He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that he commands even wind and water, and they obey him?”
When you find yourself completely worn out, at the end of your tether, and thinking that the storms and wear of living are going to overwhelm you, remember God is not fazed!
Jesus was not being foolhardy or ignorant of the storm. He had no fear of it whatsoever!
We don’t have to shout out to God to tell Him to wake up. To call out to Him and think that He doesn’t care about our boat going under. He desires for us to know that we are safe always with Him. That He is with us and that He is in control of every storm!
Weariness does come, but don’t mix it with fear. We can grow weary in well doing the Bible tells us, but we should never be fearful that God is not in control!
