Daily devotion – square peg in a round hole

Pastor Keith   -

1 Cor 12:27 Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. 28 And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way.

I have today tried my hand at carpentry work and from a distance – like from the moon – the work that I completed looks ok. But really it’s far from what a true carpenter would do. No matter how much I measure or cut, somehow there are gaps and flaws. And does every piece of wood that I purchase have to be perfect for making a boomerang?

When I sit and watch our worship team on Sunday’s I would love to be able to play a musical instrument, especially the drums (I tried but no…) or be able to at least read music.

1 Cor 12: 15 If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body,” is it therefore not of the body? 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body,” is it therefore not of the body? 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where would be the smelling? 18 But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased. 19 And if they were all one member, where would the body be?

The point of all this is to identify and to know what gift God has given me to bring a blessing to His body. If I decided to try and play the piano or hit the drums or strum the guitar, a new exodus would begin in the Church not needing Moses!

There are many many gifts and the Church truly ‘hums’ when we discover what our gift is and when we use it to bring a blessing to others.

God does not operate in the ‘good enough or near enough’ area when it comes to His Church. Just like our body cannot function correctly if the members of our body just operated in a similar manner.

Let us seek God’s wisdom and then operate in the gifting He has given each of us for the blessing of the entire body of Christ.
