Daily devotion – words…first and last
Famous first words and famous last words have been recorded over history.
Picasso could draw before he could speak, and he first learned to ask for things by drawing pictures of them. His first word was “piz,” his baby pronunciation of lápiz, the Spanish word for “pencil.” He would say it in order to get his mother to give him a pencil.
Julie Andrews’s memoir begins, “I am told the first comprehensible word I uttered as a child was ‘home.’” According to her parents, she said it as they were pulling up to their house in the car. It came out with a slight rising intonation, as if she was testing out the word. Her parents wanted to be sure she had really said it, so they drove around the block in order to approach the house again, and she repeated the performance. “The word has carried enormous resonance for me ever since.”
Famous last words have also been recorded too over time such as the following:
“I’ll be fine” – Heath Ledger.
“I’ll be back in five minutes – alright?” – Paul Walker.
“I’m losing it” – Frank Sinatra.
“It’s better to burn out than fade away” – Kurt Cobain.
“Money can’t buy life” – Bob Marley.
“Yeah” – John Lennon.
Do you know the first recorded words of our Lord? At 12 years old…. , How is it that ye sought me? Did you not know that I must be about my Father’s business? – Luke 2:49
And our Lord’s last words…… So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. – John 19:30.
His was a life lived for the soul purpose of fulfilling His Father’s will at all cost. A life lived unselfishly for you and I!
So often we can get so selfish about our own lives and time. As I was sitting in Church on Sunday night, I was reflecting over the 46 plus years that Helen and I have walked with Christ. Every Sunday night since that first evening we gave our heats to the Lord we been in God’s presence amongst His Church worshipping Him and sitting under His Word.
We each are given the same amount of time each day, each week, each month, each year until we breathe our last breath.
I pray that your last words might be like those of the Apostle Paul, 2 Tim 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.
