Daily devotion – write your life in one sentence
2Ti 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
If you were asked to write a sentence that summed up your life, your years of living, what would you write? It’s a serious question and not one to be taken lightly.
There will come a moment when you may well ask yourself this question. One day just sitting in a chair at home, or perhaps on a more dramatic scenario, lying-in bed awaiting a serious operation, or sitting opposite a doctor who has the difficult task of informing you that you have but a few months to live.
We take so much for granted at times, a little like the rich farmer Jesus tells the story of in Luke’s Gospel chapter 12: “A rich man had a fertile farm that produced fine crops. 17 He said to himself, ‘What should I do? I don’t have room for all my crops.’ 18 Then he said, ‘I know! I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones. Then I’ll have room enough to store all my wheat and other goods. 19 And I’ll sit back and say to myself, “My friend, you have enough stored away for years to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!”’
20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’
Right now, today, if it was to be your last ever opportunity to sum up your life, what would you write?
Paul was able to write a sentence that revealed he had given everything he had to live for Jesus Christ, that there was nothing left for him to do that he had not done.
The dash between your date of birth and your date of passing is the story of your life.
What story are you telling? What words would your wife, your husband or your children use if they were asked to write in one sentence your life’s impact and meaning?
Jesus, after telling the story of the rich farmer then spoke the following words, Luke 12: 21 “Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.”
