Daily devotion – Prego!

Pastor Keith   -

Pro 25:11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.

On our one and visit to the City of Rome, Helen and I experienced the wonderful cuisine and coffee of this amazing city, but these do not hold the peak of my appreciation of the city. What I enjoyed each day we were there the most was hearing the word – Prego – spoken to us.

Prego in Italian as many of you may know means, “Thank you and you’re welcome.” It was the way these words were spoken to us, and the true sense of meaning each time we were on the receiving end, that touched our hearts!

Since that time in Rome, I don’t think I have had those words spoken to me since. However, over the last week, some people have taken the time either by word of mouth, or writing, to say something very similar in English. What a joy such moments are.

James tells us that our tongues and how we use them are so important and deeply powerful – Jas 3:6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.

The Apostle Peter tells us also, 1Pe 3:10 “He who would love life and see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit.”

How many times have you have said hello to a stranger in your daily living but not a word has been spoken back in return?

As followers of Christ, let us be the ones who use our tongues and our words to express the joy and gratitude we have been given by Christ to others in our daily living.

When you say, “Prego”, in other words, thank you and you’re welcome, pause for a moment, because the person on the receiving end will look at you with complete shock and surprise. For no one else has taken the time or effort to do so with them before.

God gives us so many open doors throughout our day to share the love and grace of God, but we step over and ignore so many of them.

Make it a point today to make a concerted effort and let us remember what we have to share is Good News!
