Daily devotion – Sleep
Psalm 3: But You, O LORD, are a shield for me,
My glory and the One who lifts up my head.
4 I cried to the LORD with my voice,
And He heard me from His holy hill. Selah
5 I lay down and slept;
I awoke, for the LORD sustained me.
6 I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people
Who have set themselves against me all around.
Does worry keep you awake at night? Is a good night sleep something you have not experienced for some time? This wonderful Psalm is medicine for such an ailment.
When David was in exile from Jerusalem because his son Absalom had stolen the kingdom – 2 Samuel 15 – 18, David penned these words.
Actually Psalm 3 is a psalm for the morning and the following psalm 4 is one for the evening.
How was David able to sleep when his life was in such grave danger? In verse 1, and verse 6, it says the enemy was against him. But David knew that God was for him. God surrounds us – verse 3, He sustains us – verse 5, and He saves us – verse 7.
When people discourage you – Many are they who say of me, “There is no help for him in God.” – verse 2, God lifts up your head and keeps you going – But You, O LORD, are a shield for me, My glory and the One who lifts up my head.
God never sleeps – Psalm 121:3-4, so why should you stay awake and worry?
If you can’t sleep, don’t count sheep – talk to the Shepherd!
