Daily devotion – abandoned
Psalm 9:9The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, A refuge in times of trouble.
10 And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; For You, LORD, have not forsaken those who seek You.
I remember watching a TV special about a group of kids, brothers and sisters, whose mother had one day walked out of the house, leaving two of the children alone in the house, to never return. This same mother left one child at a picture theatre in a basket and never returned for that child as well. The children somehow found each other and began a search. A search for their mother. They longed to know her!
The human soul does not suffer abandonment with ease. There must be a place of refuge in time of trouble. There must be a place for healing in a time of brokenness. There must be a shelter when the storms of life are raging.
Our Rock and hiding place is Jesus Christ. Our place is secure in Him only because He has taken upon Himself the ultimate abandonment that we deserve.
Jesus cried from the Cross of Calvary, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
In His crucifixion Jesus endured the depth of our emptiness and final loneliness in separation from God. In the gift of His cross and resurrection, we may rest assured that God has not forsaken us.
We are not left to our own devices in a lonely picture theatre or empty house like eternally frightened children. No! When we seek the Lord, we are surrounded by the host of Heaven and we are covered by the love of our Heavenly Father.
We are safe!
