Daily devotion – the gift of time
Pro 17:6 Children’s children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.
As one grows older in the Lord and in physical years, God’s voice at times seems even clearer and clearer, as one becomes more reflective and less encumbered with busyness and daily distractions.
This week as I was reading God’s precious Word as I do each day and through the day, I was impressed by the Lord on how selfish I had lived much of my life, even after coming to know Christ as my Lord and Saviour. Memories of me indulging in my self interests when I had opportunity after opportunity to see to the needs of others, especially those in my own family, be given time to attend to.
I have come to a very real understanding that most of my life in years are past and there are less in front of me than behind me. By now all selfish living and privilege should be a thing of the past. Now I have been given great opportunity to spend time with grandchildren, and our own children by taking time to speak with each in greater intimate detail. To share with them mistakes I have made, the things God has taught me and to pray and help each one on their own journey with Jesus Christ. To listen to their stories and struggles intently!
I have overseen many funerals over the 43 plus years of pastoring, and surely a lesson I have learned is to have no regrets of time wasted. Time is precious, your children’s time is a treasure and grandchildren’s time even more precious now.
My prayer daily now is to ask the Lord to help me no longer live a moment for my own selfishness, but to spend the precious time left, to enjoy and be lost in the wonderous youth and innocence that is right under our noses.
I encourage you to take a step back from your own ‘important’ issues and not miss the privilege of those precious souls around us.
Psa 103:17 But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children;
