Daily devotion – memories of our walk with God

Pastor Keith   -

As one grows older in years and in our relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ, we have over time built up a great deal of memories.

Holding our youngest grandchild, the other night I was taken back to how he reminded me of Israel our firstborn at the same age. Helen and I were living in Dunsborough at the time and attending a small local Church in the area filled mainly with hippies and surfers. We would attend mid-week Bible study and take Israel with us, and Helen would wrap him up and I remember just holding him when giving Helen a break at times.

I am taken back by the journey of our walk with God. We were a young couple a few years in our marriage and likewise in our relationship with God. It was the most wonderful adventure of our lives that God had invited us to and to be a part of. We had many visitors to our house in Dunsborough due to its location on the beach. It was a time that God used to help us grow close to Him in the simplest of ways.

There would be no one on ‘our’ beach most days, and Helen and I would place Israel in a little stroller and walk along the quiet foreshore with the only sound being the gently lapping of the tide as we walked and prayed to the God who loves us.

There is never a time wasted if our hearts are hungry to know Christ, to learn from Him and to seek what He would have us do in serving Him.

Just a few years later, God called us into the ministry, which meant we needed to sell our ‘idyllic’ beach house and move to Perth, resign from my job, and pack what little we had and head to Perth to study.

Psa 37:23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.

Memories, how wonderful to see God’s hand in your memories. To see God’s hand in your children and grandchildren.

Times were not always easy and there were moments when all Helen and I had was the call of God guiding us and by faith we journeyed.

As we read of so many others in the Bible, Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah, on to Joseph and Mary. Memories become treasures when God has been the one building and shaping them!

I pray that God has been shaping your memories as well as He calls you to serve Him with your life.
