Daily devotion – a yellow rose lesson
Matthew 6: 28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
In our front courtyard garden we have several rose plants. Last week a beautiful intense yellow rose bloomed for the first time in all its glory and colour. It was the first time we had a yellow rose as such, and its colour was magnificent to behold.
This morning, as I was up very early as usual, I spent some time in our front yard just admiring the garden that Helen has worked on so diligently and there on the ground were a mass of wilted yellow rose petals. Leaving just a few pale-yellow straggler petals on the stork of the rose. As I looked at what had happened, I was reminded of Jesus teaching in Matthew 6 about the flowers, the grass of the field and the birds of the air. How God cares for them each and every day without fail.
These are just passing things, like that beautiful yellow rose blossom, but you and I are not so. Christ came to give us eternal life and when Jesus taught this lesson He was emphasizing how much our Heavenly Father cares and looks after each of His children. We have many little frail birds that call our garden home and I see them each day happy and fed by He who created them.
Perhaps as you are heading towards Christmas, worry and a lack of certain things, are casting a dark shadow over your Christmas spirit.
Step out into your yard if you have a garden or go for a stroll and let God show you Himself, with the flowers and the birds, that He has you in His care.
31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
When we cast off our worry we are able to see the Light of God once again and know our lives are in His hands and that He will certainly love and care for us if we look to Him!
