Daily devotion – peace at last.

Isa 9:6
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

We come today to the last of the blessed names and ministries of our Lord in this packed full verse by Isaiah. Fittingly the final Name of our Lord is Peace – for this is what we all long for, to be the place where we will find when our days are done. But this peace we can have even now!

The Prince of Peace, He takes care of all the disturbances that sweep over our lives. We can attest that we are now living in troubled times. As we look around the world, there is little peace, and it just seems as if everything is going wrong.

On that first Christmas night, it was the angels who went to announce the birth of our Saviour to the shepherds in the fields of Bethlehem. Helen and I have stood in what many believe was the location of this amazing evening’s events. It is not that far out of the town of Bethlehem, this small rocky field.

That night the angels cried out, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” – Luke 2:14

We look at our world and say, “Where is the peace the angels promised?”

Today in the very location that message was given there is war.

Things seem more chaotic than ever before.

But we need to understand the original meaning of that statement. A more literal translation would read, “Peace on earth among men that are pleasing God.” If you take a look at most of the wars and problems we are facing today, you will see they are created by human beings, by wicked people breaking God’s commandments.

But God will bring peace to the person who is well pleasing to Him. Jesus the Messiah, the Prince of Peace, wants to bring peace into your life.

There is a saying, “What’s in a name?” Well that all depends on whose name it is. The Bible says, “Phl 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

One day everyone will eventually confess that Jesus Christ is the Lord, no matter how wealthy, important, or famous they have been.

His name is above every name – Amen!
