Daily devotion – fishing on the wrong side in the wrong way!

Pastor Keith   -

John 15:5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.

I tried and failed at something again today. Fishing! No matter the hour, the location, the effort, no fish as usual.

I am reminded of a professional fisherman who had fished all night and he too caught nothing. Imagine now that this was your income source, your means of living and providing for yourself, and you had nothing after toiling all night. And remember that Peter has fished all his life.

From the a man called Jesus came a call as Peter cleaned and fixed his empty nets.

Luke 5: 4 When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”
5 But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” 6 And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. 7 So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!”

The instructions seemed foolish to Peter and would have been the same for us. What difference does one side of the boat make to another – really!

But the point of this most wondrous passage of Scripture is Jesus gave the instructions and Jesus was in charge!

This Scripture is one of my favourites personally in the Bible. For I have also been like Peter, working and trying my own things for God. And no fish!

This is the incredible story for each of us in 2024, to stop wasting our time and effort, on things that God has not instructed us to be a part of or do.

If you are finding failure after failure, it could well be that you, with all your talent and professional know-how, you are not heeding Christ’s direction for your life and your situation.

Psa 127:1
A Song of Ascents. Of Solomon. Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the LORD guards the city,
The watchman stays awake in vain.

This week let us not waste our time and energy doing things our way only to achieve nothing!

Let’s throw the net where Jesus has put the fish!
