Daily devotion – what are we known for.
People today are fascinated with their physical bodies. Gyms, health clinics, professional trainers are all a part of life for many. We have a wealth of shows and media advertising about eating right, exercising regularly and importantly, getting the right amount of sleep.
Many of these things make up for a healthy lifestyle. The Bible tells us as well – 1Co 6:19 – 20 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit…therefore honour God with your body..
But is there a possibility that we over emphasise the attention we give to our bodies? Almost worship them by giving them the amount of attention that only God deserves. To a point that we can focus on our physical health so much that we ignore the health of our soul.
1Ti 4:8 For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.
We can gauge where the focus is in our own lives by our own conversations. When we speak to people is our speech filled with the latest health trends, diets, new gym or exercise program? Do we give as much attention in our communication to what book of the Bible we are currently reading. How last week’s sermon ministered to our heart. Answers to prayer that God has recently wrought in our lives.
Let us be known as people of the Lord, not people of ‘the Lord’s Gym’. The Bible tells us that Luk 6:45 “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”
It may not be only our passion for health, diet or exercise, it can also be our career, our sport or our hobby. Each day and each week I believe we should be asking the Lord to help us always have Him first in our lives and our service to Him always be at the forefront of our living and our communication.
Let us remember that Rom 10:14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? Rom 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Let us never lose sight of our mission – we are here to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
By all means let us live a healthy lifestyle but may such living never rule or define who we are. Let us always be known as people who have been with Jesus!
