Daily devotion – Salt
Mat 5:13
Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
How does a Church remain salty as Jesus describes?
We are to be salt through character and contact – two words!
We are the salt of the earth by being Christlike. Jesus did not say, “You are to scatter the salt.” He said, “You are the salt!” If we are to preach the Gospel and impact our family and our community, it must be through the compelling power of saintly character.
I cannot be salty either unless I have salt in myself. If the Christian loses his enthusiasm, if he loses his ‘tang’, if he becomes insipid, then he becomes utterly useless. He is fit for nothing Jesus says but to be cast aside.
The trouble with the Church of Laodicea in the Book of Revelation was that it had lost its zeal. It had lost its glow. Its enthusiasm had fallen and became dull, listless and bland. No salt!
If we are to salt the earth, we must come in contact with those we are to salt. You do not salt meat by putting it in one barrel and the meat in another.
The two had to be brought into contact.
When Jesus came to save the lost, He did not undertake His mission whilst keeping Himself at a distance. He came into contact with men in the most intimate fashion possible.
The Son of Man came not to be ministered unto but to minister, and to give His life a ransom for many.
We can serve and be salty in no other way.
“You are the salt of the world!”
Let us be salty and let us salt our own homes each day.
