Daily devotion – two men, two different lives!

Gen 19:1

And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;

How much we can learn from looking at the life of Abraham and that of his nephew Lot!

When the Lord visited Abraham on the plains of Mamre with two of His angels, Abraham was sitting at his tent door, but Lot was sitting in the gate of wicked city.

Abraham was a pilgrim and a stranger, only passing through this world on his way – Heb 11:10 …..to a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

But Lot had gradually abandoned his tent and had embedded himself and his family in Sodom.

Instead of keeping his eyes on the heavenly city, Lot’s gaze was locked toward Sodom and he began to walk by sight, not faith – Gen 13:10-11. Then Lot moved his tent near Sodom – Gen 14:12.

Finally, Lot is located in the gate of Sodom which tells us that he was a man now of some authority in Sodom, for that was where official business was conducted.

It’s these little steps in Lot’s life that led to him willingly offer to sacrifice his two unmarried daughters to the lust of a perverted mob but thankfully the angels of the Lord stepped in.

This week, take a step back and overview your walk with God. Where are your eyes fixed, on what prize? Are you finding yourself more comfortable in this world, more comfortable in the company of non-believers. Are your children, your family being sacrificed for worldly passions or are they walking with you as you honour and serve the Lord each day?

Let’s live like Abraham and keep our eyes focused on heaven and our grip on this world light!
