What’s in a Name?
Names hold power. They convey identity, purpose, and meaning, far beyond mere labels. This is especially true when we talk about the names given to God in the scriptures. Mention ‘God’ in society and some people confuse Him with ‘the great spirit’ or ‘allah’ or express all sorts of different beliefs about God contrary to the scripture – even some people who profess to be followers of God are unclear. It is vital for those who are children of God to know and understand who God is. Thankfully, He has revealed Himself in the Bible, and through a variety of names. Every name of God reveals a dimension of His character that speaks directly to the human condition—whether it’s to provide, heal, protect, or save… the list goes on! Delving into the depth and significance of God’s names, provides a rich perspective on His characteristics and can transform our relationship with Him.
One striking example from scripture is when Moses, standing at the burning bush, asked God who he should say sent him to rescue the Israelites. God’s response was profound: “I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14). This name, Yahweh, reveals God’s unchangeable, self-sufficient nature. It tells us that God is eternally present, without beginning or end, fully self-sustaining, and always existing in the present. To quote an old preacher called J. Vernon McGee: “This is God’s universe and He does things His way. You may have a better way, but you don’t have a universe!”
This name, Yahweh, is not just a label. It is a promise. It speaks to God being whatever He knows we need Him to be. Need deliverance? “I AM,” says the Lord. Need mercy? “I AM.” Need strength? “I AM.” This revelation is meant to comfort us, reminding us that God is ever-present in our struggles and joys.
In the New Testament, Jesus embodies the name of God fully, revealing Himself as the Christ, the Messiah (Matthew 16:16). This title isn’t just a surname—it’s a declaration of His purpose. Jesus is the ultimate answer to humanity’s deepest need—the problem of sin and death. As He declared Himself to be the life and the resurrection, He established His role as the bridge between God and man, offering salvation and eternal life through His name.
Our modern challenge is to live as true reflections of God’s character. Often, we, like the ancient Israelites, cry out to God only in times of severe distress. However, understanding the vastness and intimacy of God’s names should encourage us to depend on Him at all times.
Over the next few blogs, as we explore more about the names of God—Jehovah-Jireh, El Shaddai, Jehovah-Rapha, and more—we aim to deepen our understanding and relationship with Him. By learning the significance behind each name, we can approach God not only in our dire needs but in everyday moments, growing in faith and confidence in who He is: our Provider, Healer, Shepherd, and King.
Let us strive to be children of God who reflect His power and love, not just in our words but through our lives. As we delve deeper into understanding His names, may we find our souls strengthened, our faith bolstered, and our lives transformed.
