Daily devotion – a day of reckoning

Pastor Keith   -

I witnessed some documents for someone today who was getting all their legal affairs in order for that which we all will face – our final time here on earth. This morning Helen and I found ourselves behind a hearse heading to Fremantle Cemetery with a coffin in the back of it. No funeral cars following just the hearse with the casket and some flowers.

As we followed the vehicle, we began to wonder the story behind the person for which the funeral was about to occur.

The reality of death is always before us, and it is a foolish person who is not prepared.

Luke 12:16 Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. 17 And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’ 18 So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.” ’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’
21 “So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

We are a funny creature – we spend more time in preparing for the day of the wedding than we do about the marriage.

We all will with certainty face death and yet so few are ready for it! No wonder Jesus called the man a fool who did nothing about his soul’s end!

When we place our lives in our Lord’s care, He sorts everything out for us including our day of leaving this world, our last breath.

This is why believers have a peace that the world cannot provide and are ready for even greater things when we breath our last breath in this world. The fear of death Jesus has wonderfully removed from all those that are His.

May we never be called foolish by our Creator.
