Desperate Faith – Our Wednesday Prayer night study from Mark’s gospel (Ch 5)

Pastor Israel Carmody   -

In Mark 5:21-41, we encounter two stories intertwined—Jairus, a synagogue ruler, and an unnamed woman suffering from a long-term illness. These stories reveal a common theme: desperate faith.

Jairus, a man of power and prominence, was brought low by a crisis beyond his control. His twelve-year-old daughter was gravely ill, and despite his status, he could do nothing to save her. His desperation drove him to Jesus, whom his peers often opposed. By humbling himself and seeking Jesus’ help, Jairus acknowledged his deep need—his faith transcended his position, illustrating that true faith often begins when we recognise our own insufficiency.

Similarly, the unnamed woman had been suffering for twelve years, her condition rendering her both physically and socially isolated. Having exhausted all medical options and her finances, she reached out to Jesus in her desperation. Her faith was simple but profound: she believed that merely touching Jesus’ garment would heal her. Her touch was more than physical; it was a touch of faith that drew power from Jesus, healing her instantly.

Both Jairus and the woman came to Jesus with desperate faith, acknowledging that He was their only hope. Their stories remind us that faith often flourishes in our deepest needs. When we humble ourselves and approach Jesus with the confidence that only He can meet our needs, we too can experience His healing and restoration. Desperation, when coupled with faith, becomes a powerful force that draws us closer to God and allows His grace to transform our lives.

You are invited to join us as we study and pray together at the church this Wednesday from 7.00 p.m.
