The Healing Touch of Jesus in our hopelessness

Pastor Israel Carmody   -

In Mark 5:25-34, we encounter a woman whose life has been marked by 12 years of suffering due to a persistent condition of bleeding. Her story reveals three critical aspects: her condition, her conviction, and her confession.

Her Condition: This woman’s condition was more than just a medical issue; it was a life of isolation and despair. She suffered from a condition of prolonged bleeding, that according to Jewish law, made her ceremonially unclean, and consequently ostracised from society. She was barred from worship, unable to attend synagogue or temple services, much like a leper. Despite spending all her resources on physicians, her condition only worsened, leaving her helpless and hopeless. Her predicament paints a powerful picture of the effects of sin in our lives—constant, incurable, and isolating. Sin separates us from God, much like this woman’s condition separated her from the community.

Her Conviction: Despite her condition, this woman had a remarkable conviction. She believed that if she could just touch Jesus’ garment, she would be healed. Her faith was not merely an act of desperation but a deep belief in Jesus’ power. When she touched His robe, she didn’t just touch a piece of cloth; her faith touched the heart of Jesus, and she was healed. This act demonstrates that true faith is not about the magnitude of our actions but the depth of our belief.

Her Confession: After being healed, Jesus asked, “Who touched me?” Not because He didn’t know, but because He wanted her to confess. Her confession was necessary for her complete restoration—both with God and the community. It was also a moment of teaching for others, including Jairus, who was witnessing this event. Jesus’ response to her—calling her “daughter”—shows His compassion and personal care.

This passage reminds us that no matter how isolated or hopeless we may feel, faith in Jesus can bring restoration and healing. Just as the woman’s touch of faith drew power from Jesus, our faith in Him can touch His heart and bring about the change we so desperately need.
