Daily devotion – a still small voice

Helen and I had the blessed opportunity to be with some of our grandchildren this week at the Perth Royal Show. They loved it, and we truly enjoyed the time with them. Of course, we had to make the journey through Sideshow Alley where all the rides are located—places that most adults avoid.

What struck us was how each ride and stall blasted its own music, designed to pull in young minds, convincing them that being launched into the sky at dizzying speeds is thrilling, or that paying $15 to take two shots at a basketball hoop is somehow a great deal.

It was noisy—no silence, no stillness—just loud sounds and flashing lights.

Isn’t life a lot like that sometimes? Like Sideshow Alley—bright lights, expensive attractions promising satisfaction, and a lot of loud noise from living in a fallen world.

I was reminded of a time when the prophet Elijah, on the run and hiding in a cave, tried to find the voice of God.

1 Kings 19:11-13 says:
“The LORD said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.’ Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.”

God spoke to Elijah in a gentle whisper. It wasn’t in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire—it was in the still, small voice.

We will never hear the still small voice of God unless we pause, remove ourselves from the “Sideshow Alley” of life, and listen. God is always speaking, but the noise we surround ourselves with often drowns Him out.

Psalm 46:10 encourages us: “Be still, and know that I am God.”

Your life right now may be full of noise—fear, failure, pain, or sorrow. The enemy loves to create distractions and make noise, hoping to silence the voice of God in your life. But God’s voice will never be silenced. The same voice that said, “Let there be light,” speaks to you today.

“This is My beloved Son, hear Him!”

God’s quiet voice is calling to you today: “Fear not, for I am with you.”
