Daily devotion – always by our side!

In 2 Timothy 4:17-18, we read some of the final, powerful words of the Apostle Paul before his death in Rome. His words carry a sense of both humility and confidence as he reflects on God’s faithful presence during the most difficult moments of his life.

Paul had just spoken about the disappointment and pain of being abandoned by others, but he introduces a powerful contrast with the word “but.” While people had deserted him, God had not. Paul declares, “But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me.” This is a testament to the unwavering faithfulness of God, especially in times of great hardship.

Here, Paul shares a personal and profound truth: even when he was left alone by others, God’s presence remained constant. Not only did God stand by Paul, but He also strengthened him. This strength wasn’t just for survival; it had a purpose—so that the message of the Gospel could be fully preached and the Gentiles would hear the good news of Christ.

This echoes the sentiments of Psalm 23, where David, amidst his own trials, wrote: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me.” Like David, Paul experienced God’s comforting and empowering presence, even as he walked through the “valley” of his final days in prison.

In this passage, we also see that the Lord did more than just stand with Paul. He empowered him to fulfill his mission. Paul’s strength came from the Lord’s presence, and this allowed him to continue preaching, even as death loomed.

What a reassurance this is for us today! Just as Paul was strengthened by Christ, so too are we, the Church, empowered by His presence. Regardless of the trials or storms we face, we can hold fast to the promise that God is with us, strengthening us in the midst of our struggles.

Paul closes this thought with a powerful declaration in verse 18: “And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work and preserve me for His heavenly kingdom.” Even though Paul knew that his physical death was imminent, he trusted that God’s deliverance was more than just temporary. His ultimate hope was in being preserved for God’s eternal kingdom, where the trials of this life would be no more.

In the same way, when we face our own hardships—whether they be spiritual attacks, physical storms, or emotional trials—we can draw strength from Paul’s words. God is always present, always strengthening us, and He will ultimately deliver us. No matter how bleak things may seem, God’s power and presence are enough to sustain us through it all.

This week, if you feel “imprisoned” by circumstances, remember Paul’s testimony. The God who stood with Paul and strengthened him is the same God who stands with you today. In every trial, He is near, offering His strength and hope. Trust in His faithfulness, for He will never abandon you. Let us continue to walk in this truth, knowing that His power will carry us through, just as it did for Paul.
