Daily devotion – our work

Pastor Keith   -

Proverbs 18:16 tells us, “A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.” This verse is a powerful reminder of the unique talents and abilities God has given each one of us. Here at Calvary Chapel Secret Harbour, we are blessed with a diverse congregation full of skilled individuals, each gifted in different areas of work and service. Sometimes, we might be tempted to downplay our skills or the significance of our daily work, but the truth is that every role we fulfill is valuable in God’s eyes.

Take, for example, the often-overlooked role of a housewife. Many women dedicate their lives to managing their homes, caring for their families, and creating environments of love and stability. This role is incredibly multifaceted, requiring a wide array of skills and a heart of service. It’s one of the greatest and most honorable positions one can hold, reflecting the very nature of Christ’s service and care for His people.

Whatever your profession or daily tasks may be, remember that God has placed you there for a purpose. He has equipped you with the abilities needed to excel in your work, whether that’s in an office, a construction site, a hospital, or at home. Every job done with diligence and a heart for the Lord is significant and honored by Him.

Consider the example of Jesus, who worked as a carpenter. In His day, carpenters were not just builders but craftsmen who created essential tools for daily life, particularly for agriculture. Imagine the care and precision Jesus must have put into His work. His yokes for oxen, for instance, would have been perfectly fitted to ensure the comfort of the animals and efficiency in the fields. Jesus didn’t take shortcuts or do the minimum required. He worked with excellence, as unto the Lord, and we are called to do the same.

Colossians 3:23 encourages us, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.” This week, whether you’re laying bricks, washing clothes, treating patients, designing plans, or completing any task, do it to the best of your ability. Your work matters to God, and He is pleased when you use your gifts fully and faithfully.

In the Old Testament, we see a similar example in Exodus 36:1, where God gifted Bezalel, Oholiab, and other craftsmen with the skills needed to build the Tabernacle. They used their God-given talents to create something beautiful and holy, just as the Lord had commanded. Like them, we are called to use our skills to build up, serve, and glorify God in our daily lives.

So, as you go about your work this week, remember that you are serving the Lord with the gifts He has given you. Take pride in your work, do it with all your heart, and know that God sees and values your efforts.
