Daily devotion – the Bible always has the answer to our situation
Lamentations 3:22 “The faithful love of the LORD never ends! His mercies never cease.” — Lamentations 3:22 (NLT)
Last Sunday morning, we gathered as the body of Christ to partake in the Lord’s Supper, reflecting on all that Jesus has done for us. It’s a sacred moment of remembrance and gratitude, yet I’ve observed something over the years—believers who, despite their relationship with Christ, refrain from taking communion.
I once asked a man why he chose not to participate in communion on a particular Sunday. He told me that he felt unworthy because of certain things he had done. His sense of guilt kept him from partaking in something that was meant to be a beautiful reminder of God’s grace.
As you read this devotion today, I pray that you haven’t been in that situation, feeling too unworthy to take communion. Let me ask you something to shed light on this:
Have you ever loved someone who did something that hurt or disappointed you? Did you stop loving them because of it?
Of course not. You might have been hurt, but your love for them remained.
In a far greater and more perfect way, God’s love for us never wavers—even when we fall short or do something wrong. His love isn’t dependent on our performance. He loves us in our best moments, but He also loves us in our worst. His love is faithful and His mercies are endless, as Lamentations 3:22 reminds us.
Now, returning to the situation of that man not taking communion—yes, Paul teaches us in 1 Corinthians 11:27-29 not to take communion in an unworthy manner. But does that mean we should avoid communion altogether when we feel unworthy? No. Paul isn’t saying to avoid communion when we’ve sinned. Instead, he’s encouraging us to approach it with reverence, examining ourselves and our hearts.
Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 11:28, “That is why you should examine yourself before eating the bread and drinking the cup.” He calls us to reflect and make sure our hearts are right before God, not to abstain from communion but to approach it in a worthy manner.
And what’s the solution if we feel unworthy? Scripture gives us a clear answer in 1 John 1:9: “But if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.”
If we ever feel unworthy, all we need to do is confess our sins to God. He promises to forgive us and cleanse us. That man who felt unworthy could have simply taken a moment to confess his sin and repent, then joyfully participated in the Lord’s Supper.
Are there areas in your life where you’ve felt distant from God or unworthy of His love? Remember that His love is constant, His mercies are new every morning, and all it takes is a humble confession to restore the closeness He desires with you.
Let’s not let feelings of unworthiness keep us from experiencing the fullness of God’s grace and love. Every time we gather for communion, may we remember that God’s love never ends, and His mercies never cease.
