Daily devotion – a new day lays ahead.
Psalm 37:23: The Steps of a Good Man are Ordered by the LORD
A new week lays ahead of each of us.
Yes, we will go about our usual business of the day. For some, that will mean going to school. For others, it’s off to work, or perhaps a busy day at home catching up on tasks from the weekend.
But for all of us, it’s another opportunity to let God guide our steps as we yield control of our day to Him. Where will He lead us? To whom will He lead us? What news will we receive? What situations will God allow in our lives to prompt us to pray for others? Right now, we don’t know—but He does.
The moment we become children of God, we obediently commit our lives and days to Him for His guidance. While we may make plans, we must always leave room for God to redirect us according to His will.
As James reminds us:
“Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit,’ whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.’”
(James 4:13–15)
When we pray, whether in the quiet hours of the night before or the first light of a new day, let us pray that God will open doors for us to serve Him. Let us ask for opportunities to minister on His behalf, to be used by Him in unexpected ways—just as Paul asked the Church to pray for him:
“…praying also for us, that God would open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ…”
(Colossians 4:3)
This is how we, as believers, grow in obedience and learn to look forward to each day with joyful anticipation of what God will do. What amazing opportunities will He provide? What doors will He open?
I pray this week that God will guide your steps and lead you to someone who needs to hear the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, or someone who needs comfort and encouragement through prayer.
May you end each day with the assurance that God has been in charge of your life and has directed every step you have taken.
“The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.”
(Psalm 37:23)
