The Wonder of Christmas and the Call to Witness
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6
It’s just five Sundays until Christmas—a time to reflect on the incredible story of the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Christmas marks the celebration of His first coming, His arrival in humility and grace, as foretold by the prophets of old.
As followers of Christ, the Advent season fills us with anticipation. The term “Advent” means coming or visit, reminding us of both Jesus’ first coming at Bethlehem and His promised second coming in glory.
Living Between Two Advents:
Today, we live in the tension between these two Advents. On one hand, we celebrate the wonder of Christ’s birth, the incarnation of God in human flesh. On the other, we eagerly await His return, when He will reign as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
While the world’s news often overwhelms us with anger and frustration, God’s Word assures us that everything happening now aligns with His sovereign plan. The apostle Paul warned us of the perilous times of the last days:
“But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy…” (2 Timothy 3:1-5).
Such words remind us that even at the time of Christ’s birth, the world was filled with darkness, oppression, and turmoil.
We have seen in our own nation, the backlash now against the celebrating of Christ’s birth – Christmas. With people protesting such on the streets of Melbourne just last week. Others call it the ‘silly season’ or other derogative terms. Or other term that has become in the popular in the United States, “happy holidays”. That is about as vague and sterile as one could make it!
But for you and I as Christians, Christmas gives us an open door, a time in the year, to really seize the moment to witness of the wonder of He who was born in a manger in Bethlehem.
As Christmas is on everyone’s mind at this season of the year, let us share the gospel with those we encounter. When you are Christmas shopping, as you are making your purchase, you have a captive audience in the salesperson dealing with you. Start by telling them how much you enjoy Christmas and what it means to you.
You will be amazed at the opportunity those opening words will give you. The person will respond naturally with their emotions, frustrations, sadness or plans of what their Christmas will be like.
Often, they will share their problems, their thoughts about the Christmas story itself. You can in response, go a little deeper now as to how Christmas changed for you when you became a Christian. If they share some of their frustrations, sadness, or loneliness, then ask if you they would mind if you could pray for them!
Pray right there and then if they give you permission. If they are too shy, make your final words to them be that you will pray for them! Make sure you do!
Invite them to Church Christmas Eve, the worse thing they can say is no.
But wisely and carefully tell them Christ came to bring them life and that this is the real story of Christmas. For He came into the world to save us!
“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” (Luke 19:10)
Encouragement for the Season:
Advent is not just about looking back at the birth of Christ but also about looking forward to His return. As we navigate this busy season, let us remain focused on the opportunities God places before us to share His love and truth.
Witness boldly: Take every chance to point others to Christ.
Pray fervently: Ask God to prepare hearts to receive the gospel.
Celebrate joyfully: Let the joy of Christmas shine through your words and actions.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the incredible gift of Jesus Christ, our Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. Help us to seize every opportunity this Advent season to share the true meaning of Christmas with those around us. Fill us with Your boldness and compassion, and let our words and actions glorify You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Happy Advent, happy shopping, and happy witnessing!
