Building the Life of Faith: A Reflection on 2 Peter 1:1-11
When we examine 2 Peter 1:1-11, we encounter a compelling call to spiritual growth. Peter, writing to believers facing challenges, urges them to anchor their lives in a steadfast faith rather than allowing them to lean precariously like a tourist attraction—much like the infamous Leaning Tower of Pisa.
At the heart of Peter’s message is the reminder that the foundation of our faith is Christ. Like the solid rock upon which Jesus promised to build His church, our lives must be built on the unwavering truth of His work. This foundation is not something we earn but a gift from God, sustained by His power and promises. These promises are like divine cheques—written by a trustworthy God and backed by His limitless power. But they require action; we must “cash” them by actively living them out.
Spiritual growth is not passive. Peter challenges us to cooperate with God in building a faith that matures and thrives. He offers a “building code” of qualities to develop: virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love. These traits, like layers in a structure, build upon one another, leading to a fruitful and effective life.
Growth also requires intention. Abundant, overflowing faith doesn’t happen by accident. Peter reminds us that spiritual maturity is marked by a life that refreshes and blesses others—much like fruit from a healthy tree nourishes those who partake of it.
Finally, Peter warns against spiritual stagnation. A believer who forgets their identity in Christ and neglects growth risks becoming blind and barren. Instead, we are called to remember our new life, continually adding to our faith and living as those who know they are redeemed.
Are you growing up or just growing old? Peter’s words challenge us to build a life of faith that stands strong, grows steadily, and glorifies God.
