Daily devotion – wise and foolish investment
Matthew 6: 19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
In August we have the arrival of our big bills for the year, rates and water etc that show their faces regularly at that time which we are always shocked at when they land even though each year like clockwork this happens.
Now as summer always brings with it a host of extra costs when just days before Christmas things around our house seem to stop, breakdown or just fall apart! The added annoyance with these in near weeks of Christmas is that tradesmen, repairers and such are snowed under with workload, and you hear the news, “The earliest we can be there is March 2025!” No washing clothes or chilling food or having a secure household until then I guess.
As Jesus said, the things we place so much concern onto that occupy our lives in a detrimental manner, will be eaten by moths or decay, and rust will devour even the strongest metals and structures. But alas at this time of the year, burglaries and opportune theft are at their highest peak also.
Not one speck of these earthly treasures will accompany us when we leave this world and our body goes back to the earth and dust it came from.
In this time of Advent, it is a superb moment for us to re-evaluate what we consider are our treasures, our wealth, the things that consume our time money and efforts.
But Jesus did not stop His discussion with that of the world, no He then makes the point of our future life, the treasures we are able to lay up in Heaven.
For some, their investment portfolio in Heaven lays blank because their hearts are embedded in this world, and they have taken no thought whatsoever of the next.
Where do you sit right now at this moment. Is your earthly account overflowing because if it is its just more for the moths, the rust and thieves to have their way with.
But if you are investing all in your future eternal existence, my goodness how wonderful it will be when you finally arrive home in glory and see the ‘wealth’ that you have accumulated!
No moths, no rust and no thieves!
