Boasting or Humility? Learning from Paul’s Example

Pastor Israel Carmody   -

In 1 Corinthians 4:6–13, Paul confronts the arrogance of the Corinthians, who were boasting in their own wisdom and aligning themselves with different leaders. He reminds them not to go beyond what is written (v. 6), making it clear that everything they have is a gift from God. Their pride was misplaced—they were acting as if they had already arrived spiritually, as if they were reigning like kings.

Paul then contrasts their self-satisfaction with the reality of true Christian service. He and the other apostles were fools for Christ, weak, dishonoured, and treated as the scum of the earth (vv. 9–13). Instead of seeking status, they embraced suffering for the sake of the gospel.

This passage is deeply relevant today. How often do we fall into the same trap as the Corinthians—chasing comfort, recognition, or spiritual superiority? It’s easy to measure success by worldly standards, but Paul’s life reminds us that faithfulness to Christ is not about prestige but about humility and sacrifice.

So how do we apply this?

  1. Recognise that everything we have is from God – Our abilities, opportunities, and even our faith are gifts. Instead of boasting, we should live with gratitude.

  2. Resist the temptation to seek status – Do we serve Christ because we love Him, or because we want to be seen as spiritual? True discipleship isn’t about being admired; it’s about being faithful.

  3. Embrace the cost of following Jesus – Serving Christ may bring hardship, rejection, or discomfort. But like Paul, we are called to press on, knowing that our reward is in Christ.

Instead of seeking to impress others, let’s follow Paul’s example—choosing humility over pride and faithfulness over worldly success.
