Daily devotional – happiness
The late King George V once wrote in the flyleaf of a friend’s Bible: “The secret of happiness is not to do what you like to do, but to learn to like what you have to do.”
Today, people are chasing happiness as if it were the ultimate goal in life. Many even come to church expecting to find happiness, but happiness is not an end in itself—it is a by-product of something far greater.
Jesus helps correct this misguided pursuit when He tells His disciples, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33)
The “things” Jesus speaks of are the necessities of life—food, drink, clothing, shelter. He reminds us not to make these our chief pursuit. Instead, He calls us to seek first the Kingdom of God.
How do we do this?
By submitting ourselves daily to Jesus Christ as King, surrendering our plans, desires, and will to Him. It is in this daily devotion that we find not only happiness, but something far deeper—the joy of the Lord. The Apostle Peter describes it as: “Joy unspeakable and full of glory!” (1 Peter 1:8)
True happiness comes when we stop chasing after it and start seeking Christ. Make Him your pursuit today, and you will find a joy that never fades.
