Growing Up in Christ: Moving from Milk to Meat
Spiritual growth is essential in the life of every believer, yet many Christians remain stuck in spiritual infancy. In 1 Corinthians 3:1-3, Paul rebukes the Corinthian church, saying, “I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready.” They were believers, but they were immature— living in ways that gave the flesh and its appetites greater control than the Holy Spirit.
This raises an important question: Are we growing in our faith, or are we stuck on spiritual milk?
Just like a baby needs milk before it can handle solid food, new believers need foundational teachings. But at some point, we must mature. Paul contrasts spiritual maturity with spiritual infancy. The mature believer discerns truth, walks in obedience, and seeks God’s wisdom, while the immature believer remains caught up in worldly thinking, division, and self-centredness.
Unfortunately, many Christians live as carnal believers—saved, but still controlled by their old nature. They struggle with the same sins, the same attitudes, and the same conflicts, not experiencing the fullness of life in Christ.
But God calls us to grow up. Hebrews 6:1 urges us to “leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity.” This growth comes through time in God’s Word, prayer, obedience, and reliance on the Holy Spirit.
Are you feeding on spiritual milk, or are you moving toward solid food? Are you growing in wisdom and faith, or are you stagnant? God desires that we mature, live by His Spirit, and experience the abundant life He offers – it is what is best for us.
It’s time to move from milk to meat. Are you ready to grow?
