Daily devotion – Growing up!
Are You Growing Spiritually?
Hebrews 5:11-14 (NLT)
“There is much more we would like to say about this, but it is difficult to explain, especially since you are spiritually dull and don’t seem to listen. You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right. Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.”
The writer of Hebrews addressed a serious issue—spiritual immaturity. Though these believers had been in the faith for some time, they were still stuck on the basics, unable to digest the deeper truths of God’s Word.
The Apostle Paul confronted the same problem:
1 Corinthians 3:1-3 (NLT)
“Dear brothers and sisters, when I was with you I couldn’t talk to you as I would to spiritual people. I had to talk as though you belonged to this world or as though you were infants in the Christian life. I had to feed you with milk, not with solid food, because you weren’t ready for anything stronger. And you still aren’t ready, for you are still controlled by your sinful nature. You are jealous of one another and quarrel with each other. Doesn’t that prove you are controlled by your sinful nature? Aren’t you living like people of the world?”
How Do We Grow Spiritually?
Growth is not automatic. It requires intentional effort and commitment. Here’s how we mature in Christ:
Daily Study of God’s Word – We will never grow in grace and knowledge of God until the Bible becomes a part of our everyday lives. But why do we read the Word?
Some read the Bible for selfish reasons—to win arguments, to sound knowledgeable, or to prove a point.
Some read it as a literary exercise, missing the relational aspect with God.
True spiritual growth comes when we read the Word to know God personally, to hear His voice, and to apply His truth.
Meditating on the Word – It’s not just about reading; it’s about absorbing. A spiritually mature person thinks deeply about God’s truth and then lives it out in their decisions, attitudes, and actions.
Consistent Prayer – We grow spiritually by talking to God daily. Prayer aligns our hearts with His will and keeps us dependent on Him.
Commitment to Fellowship – We need the body of Christ. Spiritual growth happens in community, not isolation. Loners often remain stunted in their faith.
Sharing Our Faith – We mature by witnessing—first in our homes and then in the world. Speaking about Jesus strengthens our faith and deepens our walk with Him.
Are You Growing?
Take a moment to reflect:
Have you stagnated in your faith, settling for a comfortable level of growth?
Are you still on spiritual milk when you should be teaching others?
What steps will you take this week to grow in Christ?
God desires for you to move forward in faith. Will you press on?
