Daily devotion: Sailing into and through storms.

The Keel That Holds Us Steady
There is something truly amazing about yachting. Beyond the peacefulness of traveling by sail, there is a remarkable ability of a yacht under full sail to lean at a seemingly impossible angle—just short of rolling over—while still moving forward with power and grace.

What enables this? The keel—a massive, unseen structure beneath the waterline that provides stability and balance. In fact, the keel is weighted in such a way that even if a freak wave overturns the yacht, it will right itself again.

As followers of Christ, we don’t have any outward, physical difference from non-believers. We don’t have a visible keel—but we have something far greater.

Through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we are upheld in the storms of life. When we are hit by trials—when rogue waves crash against us—we may buckle at first, but we are never destroyed. The Word of God reminds us of His love, His power, and His sustaining grace.

Like yachts facing rough seas, believers will encounter storms and challenges. But God always ensures that we are set right again. Though to the world we may appear to be leaning on the brink of collapse, beneath the surface of our lives is the deep, unseen weight of God’s power and might, holding us firm and guiding us toward our destination.

“Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ…”
—Philippians 1:6

Keep sailing!
