Daily devotion – The danger of drifting!

The Danger of Drifting
If you have spent time near the ocean, you may have noticed riptides and strong currents. These powerful forces occur when waves hitting a beach need an outlet, creating extreme currents that pull water—and anything caught in them—back out to the open sea. Sometimes, these rips are visible as sandy streaks stretching into the ocean. But at other times, there are no clear signs—until you suddenly realize you’re drifting away without even noticing.

I often see a similar phenomenon in the Church. Some believers begin to drift away from fellowship. At first, they miss a service here and there. Then, those absences become more frequent, and before long, they are completely gone.

This drift only happens to those who are casual with Bible reading, prayer, and fellowship. Without realizing it, they begin to live just like their neighbors—those who have no relationship with Christ at all.

The Bible warns us against this spiritual drifting:

Hebrews 3:12-15
“Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God. You must warn each other every day, while it is still ‘today,’ so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God. For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ. Remember what it says: ‘Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled.’”

So, what do fishermen use to stop their boats from drifting? They use an anchor. And we have an anchor too—Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 6:18-19
“Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls.”

To stay firm in your faith, keep your anchor securely placed in Christ. Stay rooted in His Word, faithful in prayer, and active in fellowship. Don’t let the currents of the world pull you away—hold fast to Jesus, the Anchor of your soul.

Are you in a rip at this moment? Are you being carried away and you are not even aware of it?

Be secure and rock solid in our Saviour Jesus.
