The Fig Tree and the Signs of the Times
Matthew 24:32-35
“Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors! Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”
Jesus commands us to pay attention to the signs of the times, particularly the role of Israel in the last days. The fig tree is often used in Scripture as a symbol of Israel, and Jesus tells us that when we see it come to life, we will know that the end is near.
Today, Israel stands at the center of global conflict, fighting on multiple fronts. In response to the horrific October 7 attacks, Israel is working to neutralize threats from Hamas and Hezbollah, ensuring such tragedies do not happen again. However, the Bible tells us that the great war of Ezekiel 38-39—Gog and Magog—will take place when Israel is at peace. That is certainly not the case right now, but could Israel’s aggressive push to secure its borders lead to a temporary period of peace, setting the stage for these future events?
We do not know the exact timeline, but we do know that God’s prophetic plan is unfolding before our eyes. Jesus tells us to stay alert, to watch, and to be ready. The world is shifting rapidly, but God’s Word remains unshaken.
Let us commit to prayer, lifting up Israel and all those affected by these conflicts. Let us also examine our own hearts, ensuring that we are ready for the return of Christ. He is near—at the very doors!
