True Freedom Is Found in Christ

Pastor Israel Carmody   -

“Everything is permissible for me”—but is it really? Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 challenge our modern understanding of freedom. Many believe that freedom means doing whatever we want, but biblical freedom is different. True freedom is not about indulging our desires but about living in a way that brings life, peace, and joy.

Paul warns the Corinthians about the dangers of sin, particularly sexual immorality, because it enslaves rather than frees. When we live by our impulses, we often find ourselves trapped in cycles of guilt, regret, and brokenness. That’s not freedom—it’s bondage. But in Christ, we are called to something better.

As Christians, we recognise that our bodies have a purpose beyond pleasure. They are temples of the Holy Spirit, designed to reflect God’s glory. When we choose purity and self-control, we aren’t rejecting freedom; we are embracing the truest freedom of all—the freedom to live as God intended.

Paul’s words also remind us of the price Jesus paid for us. We were bought at a price, and that price was His own life. Our response should be one of gratitude, not rebellion. Instead of using our bodies for selfish gain, we are called to honour God with them.

The world tells us that true happiness comes from following our desires, but God tells us that true joy comes from following Him. The choice is ours. Will we pursue the fleeting pleasures of the world, or will we walk in the true freedom that comes from honouring God?
