Daily devotion- The greatest prayer ever recorded!
Glorifying the Father – As Jesus Did
John 17:1–5
John chapter 17 contains one of the most profound and sacred passages in all of Scripture. It is the prayer of Jesus—not a parable, not a teaching, but the very heart of our Saviour poured out to the Father. Whether it was prayed in the Upper Room or en route to Gethsemane, what matters most is that we are privileged to read and reflect on it today.
This is no ordinary prayer—it is the greatest prayer recorded in the Bible. In it, we see Jesus not as a victim, but as the Victor. As we approach Easter, let’s remember these words of Jesus:
“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
— John 16:33
In His prayer, Jesus begins by praying for Himself, but even in doing so, He is praying for us. He speaks of the “hour”—a moment He had often referenced throughout John’s Gospel. Everything in His life was lived on a divine timetable, just as ours is.
John 17:1–5
“Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You…”
The word “glory” appears five times in these five verses. In verse 5, Jesus speaks of the glory He had with the Father before the world existed—the glory He laid aside to become a servant, to suffer, and to die for our salvation.
And in verse 4, Jesus makes a powerful declaration:
“I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.”
What a model for us! Jesus lived every moment with one goal: to glorify His Father.
So, what about us?
Today, may God stir your heart to live each day to glorify your Heavenly Father—in your decisions, in your speech, in your actions, and most importantly, in your heart.
Begin each morning with prayer and dedication, and close each evening with thanksgiving and reflection.
This is how we honour the Lord.
This is how we glorify God—as Jesus did.
